While Malacca is famous for their chicken balls, I never knew they were this creative.
It is more common to see shop names like Ah Seng Tua Liap, Ah Heng, Ah Kau, Ah Mau, Kai See Fatt, Kiu Kai Chicken Rice balls sdn bhd but to see Ee Ji Ban is something new to me. As usual I’m usually very oblivious to the surroundings until some one spotted this signboard for me. I’m very embarrased to admit I read it as “Ee Jee Bai” when I first saw it.
The owner is smart because he do not want to be accused by his fellow countrymen for selling his soul to the Japs so he did the unthinkable by changing Japanese romanized spelling to the more mandarin sounding one. To be honest i would prefer this spelling because if he were an English educated guy, he might rename it to Itchy Bun.
While his creativity is really itchy bun but I’m not too sure if the food is really as itchy bun as it claims though. Should try it out some day. That being said, my paternal grand mother’s chicken rice cuisine has always been the most ichiban to me.
