I got my driving license rather late. It is an experience I will always cherish in me. Not because I successfully got the license at first try but it was a day where my brother and I took driving lessons together. It is the year 2003 where I was 23 years old while Jonathan is only 18 at that time.
Things were tough for my brother initially because technically he wouldn’t be allow to drive due to the knee surgery he undergo a year before. The reason being is because he cannot fully bend his knees up to 90 degrees. The driver instructor tested his lower left leg to see if he’s strong enough to push the clutch pedal.
Turns out that his leg is strong enough for the clutch and the instructor says the knee bending isn’t much of an issue as long if his lower foot is able to press the clutch pedal properly.
The instructor however recommended us to request a letter of acknowledgment from the hospital so that JPJ would exclude Jonathan from the “disabled” person category and allow him to take the test as a normal person.
Requesting for the the letter can be quite a pain because you have to deal with the ridiculous red tapes and you will never know when you are getting it. My brother was fortunate because the medical professor of that hospital is willing to help by immediately writing the letter of acknowledgment.
After getting the letter, we passed it to the driving instructor to get approval and once the road department has given the green light to my brother and we immediately began our lessons on road safety lectures. I have to say the lectures were completely boring with that ‘lecturer’ reading the road tips straight from his guide book without any elaboration.
To be continue…
