what you have written is no controversy at all. If you have analysed the “official” history of malaysia and tanah melayu in general, you ll realize a strong message of “nationalistic” and “malay-hood” where in reality, malaysia has always been a mixed basket nation.

Apart from Hang Tuah’s blind loyalty message, it has been speculated that The “Hang” brothers are actually from China, who came as bodyguards of Hang Li Po. It was also noted that in the written history of Tanah melayu then, such as the Malay Annals, there is no explicit mention of Hang Tuah and his merits.

Further dissertation of our nation’s “glory” history or at least our secondary textbooks will reveal a strong emphasis on the islamization of the country, where as, the influence of hindusm, sankrits, bugis, srivijaya, china, siam are all downplayed. British colonialism was played as an evil force, where as, there have been occasions where they were rightly in abolishing slavery, unruly tax, organised towns/economy etc etc.

Yes, history is written by the victor. But in these days, it seems like our history is just another political tool by our political master (whom themselves have not studied the actual history of the country).

There are a lot more un-written history that needed to be retold:
1) May 13th
2) operasi lalang
3) Bank BUmiputera scandal
4) Reformasi movement
5) labour unions and left wings efforts in gainin independence
6) the undeniable roles of PKM (communist) in accelerating our independence
7) the 1947 hartal organised by putera-acmja

welcoem to the real world.

“Hero worship” has a seedy underside to it. No mortal is a hero - everyone has weaknesses, even Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa actually kept poor the very people she was helping. She gave them many fishes, but refuses to teach them how to fish, saying that they can’t do it. That’s why the area is STILL poor. She did not implement modern and way more effective programs like micro-credits for the poor to start businesses, or to start proper schools. Likewise, Hang Tuah is no hero. Just the Sultan’s running dog.

Yes, I agree that it is a rather heart-wrecking event that someone who has fought for the justice of his closest friend is to die at his hand. What would become the meaning behind friendship.

However, I disagree that Hang Tuah is the one to be blamed. It was hard on him to choose between his loyalty to the Sultan and his beliefs that Sultan is always right with his friend’s right.

It is also a wrong outlet of anger for Hang Jebat to kill the innocence in his revenge against the Sultan. I suppose it would be better if he just kill the tyrant and unjust Sultan.

The main culprit would be the Sultan who has abused his power. He takes someone like Hang Tuah to be fully loyal to him as his enemy, analogy to amputation of a bruised arm which is temporary painful. It is a shame that such ruler existed in the past. But I would say that this was the norm of a monarchy.

All I want to say is that Hang Tuah is the hero of the past when loyalty to the king is of utmost priority; whereas Hang Jebat is the hero of the current generation who sees friendship as sacred. That particular Sultan is a tyranny who should never be condoned by people who study history.
