An encounter with the third kind - Part I

Date November 6, 2007

Long long time ago some where in Malacca when I was still in form 5, I did a really stupid thing. Well you know what teenage boys love to do when their raging hormones are telling them to do something to impress the ladies.

No, don’t take it the wrong way. I did not do anything lewd in front of the ladies, ok? Me and my friends challenged ourselves by going to the Chinese cemetery around midnight. The purpose is to prove that our balls are bigger than our brains. It was during the Hungry Ghost festival.

It is an ideal month to go the cemetery during this period as it adds more excitement to our journey since we know the ghosts are going to party all night long. Hey, the cemetery is a hill gifted by the sultan to Hang Li Poh as her birthday present, ok?

I have no idea why it became a cemetery in the first place because if the sultan knew what his beautiful hill has become, His Royal highness will just grant her an authentic graveyard instead ok? This hill is quite pretty to be a cemetery. Why did I say this? The largest Chinese cemetery in Malacca probably resembles Tokyo’s metropolis of the dead, while Bukit Cina practically looks like New Zealand for zombies.

Yeah, Bukit Cina is green and the surrounding air is fresh so it explains why people love to jog in this Sino Hill. But we were not there to jog; we went there to test our manhood, which is quite stupid.

We went to the cemetery after watching movies in the cinema since we thought it is the perfect time to launch our ‘expedition’. We discussed about the do’s and don’ts before starting our adventure. You know, like the pantang larang of what not to do in a cemetery that sounds like this:-

  • Never turn your head when some one calls out for your name, not even if the voice sounds like your mother’s voice. Use code names instead.

  • Don’t swear, use proper language. Respect the dead.

Sadly we did not practice what we preached because most of us did exactly the opposite once we stepped our athelete’s foot into the cemetery. But I will cover that part later. Anyway, we arrived at the scene past midnight.

The moon was not around. Probably hiding from the wandering ghosts. Just kidding of course. The thick clouds covered the moon, so it was kinda dark and we were anticipating such atmosphere. Suddenly strange things began to crop up.
