Not another story of an illegitimate child seeking revenge

Date January 11, 2008

Taiwanese Hokkien dramas are beginning to make its presence on national TV. Well I guess that is fair since there are quite a number of hokkien speakers in Malaysia. If there are Hongkie TVB dramas why not Hokkien dramas right? One thing I have to salute their actors is their versatility in acting.

Totally contrasting from their mandarin counter parts since most of them are made up from boybands or girlbands, hence they are known as Idol dramas which is not my cup of teh cina panas. Sometimes I can’t even figure out what they are saying and they appeared to be mumbling most of the time. The acting in hokkien drama is so good, they can cry any time they want.

Crying at will during acting is hard enough. It is even harder to cry convincingly. I wonder where they train their actors lol. Not to say they are bunch of sad people. But acting wise, they are good. Plot wise however, is pretty predictable and they are often long winded.

The plot is always made up of illegitimate child, illegitimate child get dump by the father or the mother left to fend for themselves, illegitimate child grows up, illegitimate turn evil, illegitimate seeks revenge from his/her father’s other family, illegitimate child seeks revenge on the wrong people, illegitimate child repents, people starts to frame the illegitimate child, illegitimate child lives miserably ever after.

The average number of episodes is 120 at least while the record belongs to a drama called The Spirits of Love that consist of 518 episodes. Since it is long winded, it doesn’t matter if you missed few episodes. Even if you stopped watching for 10 episodes, you can still follow the flow of the story. Whenever there is a new drama, just repeat the process above and replace it with another character.

The cycle continues lol. Having said that, there is a hokkien drama I enjoy. It’s Unique Flavor that is currently aired in 8tv. Although this show possesses all the plotline I mentioned above, this drama is about food and cooking. Although I do not have the privilege to catch the episodes every day, I can still follow the story because it is also long winded. Do I need to tell you Unique Flavor is made up of more than 200 over episodes?
