My love hate relationship with Chinese New Year

What I love about CNY
1. Receiving ang pow. It’s not the amount that counts, but it’s the tradition of receiving.
2. Meet cousins. Meeting cousins are always fun. There, you won’t be constantly stuck with routine questions like “when are you going to get married” or “when are you going to get yourself a girlfriend” before they assume you are gay.
3. I get to wear black. Seriously, my family doesn’t mind with the black taboo.
4. Eat bak kua. Although you can get them during any non-CNY day but it always taste different to me during CNY.
5. I get to speak full BM! Yeap, you heard that right. I enjoy speaking full BM with my peranakan friends.
6. Attending reunion dinners. Although the aftermath begins when you are gaining substantial amount of cooking oil in your waist, but it’s worth the trouble.
Things I hate about CNY
1. Traffic jam. The floating population will return to their hometown. If every malaccan returns, the state population could easily hit the 1 million mark.
2. Answering redundant questions from relatives like when you are getting married and stuffs like that.
3. Restaurants are heavily populated. Even the worst restaurant in town will be over populated during CNY.
4. Many people complain Malacca is hot. But the people are smarter this year. They don’t travel under the scorching hot sun anymore. They will normally crawl out at night. Much like zombies.

The traffic is slowly getting better. Lots of cars on the road, but it’s much more bearable now.
