You can assume this is a little follow up from my previous post on BM. Anyway, I am confused. I have always wanted to ask some one who is proficient in the Bahasa Melayu language. No thanks to my fish memory I always seem to forget. I am confused with the usage of “selamat malam”. You know, back in the days where I was in primary until Secondary school, my BM teachers asked us to wish people ‘Selamat Petang” at night and Selamat Malam is usually used when some one is finally calling it a day during night time.
They have repeatedly told us to use Selamat Petang when greeting people at night several years ago. I also got sounded by the oral test examiners for using Selamat Malam. I even saw “selamat petang” is used by the newcaster relaying their news at night in BM. But now I am seeing more and more people using Selamat Malam instead of Petang nowadays. Did they changed something within the language structure?
