Let’s pangkah Barisan Nasional

Date March 8, 2008

NOT.

But this is a joke on politics told by my Bahasa Melayu tuition teacher. I believe it was the era of the Semangat 46 party. I did not understand the joke back then. But being exposed to all the political bullshits lately, I began to decypher the meaning behind my teacher’s joke.

He was saying in the days where Semangat 46 was campaigning against the Barisan Nasional at one constiuency. The campaign was pretty successful based on the attendance and the response from the crowd. The speaker really know how to work the crowd and they were cheering all the way. But he did one mistake and it handed the BN a massive victory at the constiuency.

Yes it was huge mistake. As I was saying, the speaker really got the crowd going and shouted “mari kita sama sama pangkah Barisan Nasional! Tolak Barisan Nasional!”. In the context of normal Bahasa Melayu, the pangkah basically means you are rejecting something. Pretty much like that Tak Nak rokok campaign, where you see a cross on the cigarette butt.

But in election context, it means vote. The speaker got too excited that he forgot pangkah means undi. He only realized it after the election. So the residents did what they were told. Pangkah Barisan Nasional they did and it handed the ruling coalition a massive victory for that year.

You remind me of my ustazah during my time in Form Three in 1995 (I was a staunch secularist and Barisan Nasional fan back then), she was from PAS. She knew that all of us rooted for the BN. There was this moment where she tried to persuade us otherwise and in the end she said, “Takpe, kalau tak suka PAS hangpa pangkah sajalah nanti”.

Took a while for me before I got that one….
