Killing Neptune with our angelic voices

Date May 17, 2008

I was never a fan of open karaoke. By open karaoke I mean torturing the poor attendees with your toad voice at a particular wedding dinner or whatever dinner in a restaurant. I made a mental note that I am going to ban karaoke for my wedding dinner (if i have one). I won’t compromise on this because I know I have suffered enough every time I attend a typical chinese wedding dinner. All you get are a bunch of drunkards singing on stage. It doesn’t help when the speakers are tuned full blast and it gets even worst if you are sitting below it.

I am okay with closed KTV centers though. Since closed KTVs are always confined in a sound proof (well not 100% sound proof but better than nothing lah) room, I have no complaints about them. Please note that going to KTV is an extremely rare occurrence in my life. The last time I went there was 5 years ago at a local KTV center called City Hunter. Forget about finding Ryo Saeba there. My meimei asked me out because there is a new KTV center in town and it is operating on the former Malacca jetty located beside Century Mahkota and Holiday Inn.

There are many failed projects in Malacca. Malacca Jetty is one of them. It was re-renovated and re-opened as an entertainment outlet after it was shut down several years ago. I was pretty resentful because the state government demolished the old jetty and rebuild it with this one only to be abandoned once again.

Honestly, I like the old jetty better. Anyway, I digress. My meimei asked me out for a KTV outing and I hardly visited any of them since 5 years ago.

The only official ‘KTV’ experience that i had is my house toilet. Even though there’s no TV or microphone in the small cubicle, the echo in the toilet is strong enough to complement a siren. So that’s my only form of “KTV” within this 5 years. When I heard the jetty has been transformed into a KTV outlet, I was pretty surprised. While KTV is not new in Malacca but singing on no man’s land (in the middle of the sea actually) is certainly new.

We booked a room at 1 pm. Night sessions are fully book and you need to book 2 weeks in advance. Seems like they are really active at night. It was unusual to go to KTV under the hot scorching sun but it’s still fun. Since it is operating on the tip of the jetty, you need to walk for awhile.

If you don’t feel like walking, you can always take a buggy ride. They will send you there. Don’t worry, it’s free of charge. How nice if I own this type of car. I don’t need to pump black gold (petrol), we only need to recharge the batteries.

I am glad to make the trip because the whole outing turned out to be fun. I mean extremely fun.

Aldrin is expressing his undying love for the microphone while meimei does her trademark posing maut.

Meimei handles the microphone like a pro.

The guys are feeling blue. Edwin (right) came in late, in the end he dozed off on the couch due to lack of sleep. I think the fella went to curi ayam at night.

Since when Sting got Malay songs? I didn’t even know he sings in malay (sarcasm). I chose songs from Sting The Police fame, all I got was this. Yes liquor is allowed, just in case you find it hard to express your love through karaoke.

I am normally a shy person I don’t know why I suddenly transformed into a thick face guy and sat on the top of the couch once I touch the microphone. Nope, I wasn’t on the influence of alcohol, all I took was tea. We sang for 4 hours non stop. As a result, I lost my voice for a day.
