Chinese restaurants and hotels often charge exorbitant prices during auspicious month or day. They will come up with 1001 excuses to justify their lucky number price tag that involves the number 8. You will often see auspicious ‘numbers’ like RM888. But if you are a poor sod, you don’t even need 888. RM8.88 is sufficient either. My friend and I once joked that if she is going to organize her own wedding dinner, she’ll have no qualms at picking the 7th month of the Lunar calender.
7th month is supposedly the most cursed month of all because it is the month where ghosts will be released from the Hell Gate so organizing anything during this month wouldn’t be such a great idea. But seeing that our PM and DPM had asked us to change our lifestyle due to the petrol hike few months ago, perhaps this is the best opportunity for chinese to save more moolah from their wedding expenses.
But it only applies to those who are strictly not superstitious so don’t come and blame me if Chinese Casper decided to invade your bedroom while making love with your spouse. Chinese restaurants are always empty during the 7th month so I think they will give discounts to cover their losses incurred during the spooky period. Attractive price tags like RM888 might be slashed to RM444 but then again it only applies if you are not too allergic against the cursed number 4.
The best part is, booking the restaurant for your big fat day will be extremely easy plus you don’t have to fight like mad for a place just to secure an auspicious date for your wedding dinner. But I guess such rule will not be effective during a particular day in the cursed month due to the celebration of the mother of all auspicious dates in the Mat Salleh calender such as 8/8/8. The number 8 is damn bloody magical indeed since it manage to transform one cursed day into another auspicious day.
Just think of it like transforming smelly fart into the scent of Calvin Klein perfume. So if you are all for saving some ringgit, avoid 8/8/8 at all cost if you must. But wait, since the auscpicious day had passed and it’s all going back to the accursed month then there’s nothing much to worry anymore. We can change our lifestyle still.
